Kayaking Two Medicine Lake: A First-Timer's Guide
Two Medicine Lake is, in our biased opinion, the most paddler-friendly lake in Glacier National Park. The east end of the lake is sheltered, the views are absurd, and you can be on the water within an hour of waking up in East Glacier Park. Here's how to make a day of it.
Where to rent a kayak
Rising Wolf Outfitters in East Glacier Park rents single and tandem kayaks (life vests and paddles included). We're 10 minutes from the Two Medicine boat launch. If you don't have a roof rack, we can supply pool noodles or arrange shuttle drop-off.
Getting your boat to the water
You have three options:
- Roof rack on your vehicle — easiest if you have it.
- Pool noodles + tie-down straps — works for most cars; we'll show you how.
- Shuttle drop-off — we drop the boat at the put-in and pick it up at the end of the day. Best for groups or anyone in a rental car.
What to expect on the water
Two Medicine is a glacial lake, so the water is cold (50s°F even in midsummer) and remarkably clear. Wind can pick up in the afternoon — most paddlers launch by 9 a.m. and aim to be off the water by 2 p.m. The east end is well-protected; the middle and west end are exposed and can get choppy.
A first-timer's route
Launch from the boat dock on the east shore. Paddle counterclockwise along the south shore, hugging the cliffs of Sinopah Mountain. Stop on the gravel beach at the base of Pumpelly Pillar for lunch (about 2 miles in). Return the way you came. Total: ~4 miles, 2–3 hours including a long lunch break.
What to bring
- Layered clothing — wet kayakers get cold fast even on warm days
- Quick-dry footwear (the put-in is gravelly)
- A dry bag for phone, snacks, and a fleece
- Sunscreen — UV reflects hard off the water
- Bear spray — yes, even on the lake. You'll be on shore at some point.
One rule to remember
All boats entering Glacier National Park lakes must pass an inspection for aquatic invasive species. Inflatable SUPs and kayaks generally clear quickly; hard-shell boats may need a 30-day quarantine if recently used in another watershed. Plan accordingly.
